Quickly come up with a musical group, a vegetable, and reasons to have a party. The Scattergories game includes a 3-minute sand timer so players have to be creative and clever within that span of time. Players try to make their answers unique and think of things that will be different from everyone else's so that they will earn more points. With more than 190 categories and 20 letters on the die, there are more than 3,500 category combinations! So, the Scattergories game is exciting to play over and over again. One thing that makes the Scattergories game different from other games is the 20-sided die, which provides endless fun for each round. The player with the highest score at the end of each round is the winner! When time is up, players compare answers and each unique answer earns a point. For example, if the die turns up the letter S, players start the timer and as quickly as possible, write down the answers to things listed on the card such as "things you plug in", "items in the vending machine," or "song titles" - each beginning with the letter S. The more creative the answers, the more points scored! To play the Scattergories game, pick a list from the category cards and roll the 20-sided letter die to determine which letter each answer will begin with. Score points for writing down answers that no one else did. ![]() Players roll the letter die, flip the sand timer, and race against the clock to come up with answers to each category on the category list. This paper was presented in the 2010 German Studies Association panel “Cosmopolitical & Transnational Interventions,” organized by B. This paper examines the underlying ideologies, policies, and debates, especially with respect to the role of proficiency in German for adult immigration, naturalization and integration, as well as educational polices and practices for German and other languages. In contrast to the official policies that stress German-only education as the key to academic success and social integration, the (covert) prestige and use of languages other than German, especially Turkish, by members of other ethnic groups has been rising, and hybrid linguistic practices are gaining ground, particularly among youth. ![]() ![]() At the same time, the use of polylingualism or hybrid linguistic practices in everyday, informal contexts by both migrants and Germans has risen to public prominence. These changes have responded to the increasing diversity of minority languages as a result of immigration from the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, and the subsequent expansion of the European Union. ![]() The years since German reunification have seen changes in ideologies and policies toward societal multilingualism, linguistic pluralism of linguistic minorities.
